In July, we gave you a hint of things to come for the next St. Augustine Music Festival season. After a summer break and reflecting on our successful 2019 festival, we’re back working, talking, and preparing for June 2020.
Celebrating + Recognizing Women in Music
2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. For its 14th Annual Music Festival, SAMF will recognize women in music from performers to composers.
How many of these names do you recognize? Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach, Lili Boulanger, and Florence Price. We can even go back to the 12th century with Hildegard of Bingen. She was a force in church music and sometimes thought of as the first woman composer. Here is a link to some good reading on women in music.
Even today, female composers are not equally recognized as their male counterparts. SAMF will work to close that gap through performance and recognition of women composers as part of our 2020 Music Festival.
Looking ahead, our Artistic Director, Jorge Peña, and our Board of Directors are actively discussing additional music events before our 2020 Festival. We will continue to communicate with you through our monthly newsletters and the St. Augustine Music Festival website in the coming months.
