Jorge A. Pena and Jin Kim-Pena launched the St. Augustine Music Festival in 2007 with little more than the belief that classical music belonged in St. Augustin amid the city’s unique historic treasures, along with a commitment to offering that music free, as a gift to the community. Honduran-born Pena studied in the U.S. at Columbus (GA) State University and Peabody Conservatory of Music He has performed as violist with dozens of orchestras and chamber ensembles, and has been with the Jacksonville Sympony Orchestra since 1996. In addition to being SAMF’s artistic director, he is conductor and music director of the Coastal Youth Orchestra and general manager of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia in Brunswick, GA. Mrs. Kim, a native of Korea, who also performs with the JSO, has appeared as soloist with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra, Korean National Orchestra, In Chun Symphony Orchestra and Korean Youth Symphony. She studied cello performance at Columbus State University, and Hart School of Music in Hartford, CT. SHe coaches for the Jacksonville Youth Symphony and teaches a small studio of cello students. The Penas have three daughters, Ines, Gaby, who plays violin with SAMF, and Elisa.
The “free, world-class music for all” vision of Jorge and Jin continues to inspire the musicians and music-lovers who form a community family dedicated to sustaining it. We thank them, and you, our audience and supporters, for embracing the musical ideal and ensuring that it plays on.
